The Bible is not anti-Science, as many falsely believe. Many have been taught this. For instance, it is widely attested that the Bible declares the earth is flat. But nowhere does the Bible say that. Indeed, this false idea of the flatness of the earth became popular with the ancient church fathers because the Medieval and Renaissance churches joined the false beliefs of the Greek philosophers to the writings of the church. It was Aristotle, the propounder of Reason, who believed the world was flat.
This habit of mixing spiritual truth with the so-called scientific truths of the world is what Paul warns against when he wrote to his first general pastoral epistle to his student, Timothy:
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
The history of the world is full of false science. Sometimes these false sciences last for decades and centuries. Sometimes they endure for a little while then they — and the memory of them– disappear entirely because Science is an art that trusts in its own advancement. Therefore science often forgets its past, treating older cures as passe or steps that had to be climbed in the name of scientific ascension. For instance, when new medicines were discovered to treat epilepsy, the old cures of avoiding grains was forgotten. And when science discovered new information about the chemical make-up of the brain, old cures such as lobotomizing those with medical depression fell out of favor.
Often, an old science is not forgotten lays low and re-appears again like the hydra with a new head or in some other form. There is often a co-mingling and intermarriage of religion, cultural assumptions and bigotry, with false science. Consider eugenics, for instance. This science was born from a combination of the Progressivist spirituality, with assumptions about the supposed superiority of the Anglo-Saxon Germanic races, and racist Darwinist ideas of evolution. Eugenics was used by Hitler’s regime as a so-called scientific reason to destroy groups scientists considered impure, tainted, or inferior — groups such as the Jews, the Gypsies, the slavs, and African Europeans. Hitler and the Nazi regime called this the Final Solution
Throughout Jewish history, the Jews have been a people who have been persecuted. The reason for this is unclear. Some Christians believe that suffering has come to the Jewish people because of the blessing and curse they placed upon themselves in Deuteronomy 27 and 28. Other Christians believe that Satan has a special hatred against the Jewish people because they are God’s people who were chosen to bear his name and to show his glory to the Non-Jewish people of the world. Whatever the reason, Jews have suffered from the beginning: At the hand of Pharoah of Egypt, various Middle Eastern kings, Hitler, Stalin, and of course Haman, an anti-Semitic nobleman during the reign of Xerxes. (The Biblical story of Esther recounts this persecution.)
Although Haman did not use the false science of Eugenics as Hitler did, the bigotry against the Jews was evident in that persecution.
Many Jewish holidays celebrate the survival of its people. Holidays such as Chanukkah, Passover, and Purim are celebrated the world over by observant and non-religious Jews.
This year, as the Jews in the Hudson Valley celebrate Purim and their survival, Christians should well consider the nature of so-called science and its opposition to the spiritual truths revealed in the Bible.
