The endorsements for 1st Ward Democratic Committeeman candidate Anne Shaw keep pouring in. Anne Shaw was endorsed by the Northside DFA.
The organization, Northside DFA (Democracy for America), is a grassroots political organization dedicated to electing socially progressive, fiscally responsible, ethically committed Democrats to all levels of government.
Northside DFA was founded in January of 2005 by Shannon Fisk and Sandra Verthein under the name Edgwater DFA. Their goal is to adopt/endorse a limited number of candidates each election cycle and then working to elect those candidates with a grassroots group of volunteers.
The endorsement of the Northside DFA for Anne Shaw is a huge boost for her candidacy in seeking to become the first Asian-American woman elected Ward Committeeman in Chicago.
The other two candidates in the race are Democratic 1st Ward Committeeman Jesse Ruben Juarez and 1st Ward Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno.
Jesse Ruben Juarez is cut from the old school of rough-and-tumble politics. Juarez is a protege of the Chairman of the Cook County Democratic party and Cook County Assessor, Joseph Berrios. He also is supported by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn.
Joe “Proco” Moreno is from the new school of politics. Joe Moreno is a disciple of Juan Rangel, head of UNO (United Neighborhood Organization). Joe Moreno is a graduate of UNO’s leadership institute. Moreno’s a young Turk, who has on occasion (ok, many occasions), ticked off Mayor Rahm Emanuel and he is known as the hipster alderman.
Anne Shaw initially entered the race after the Chicago City Council approved the city budget that called for the closing of police stations.
Shaw is a community leader and activist, who drew media attention to the police station closings by organizings marches, rallies and protests. Shaw has asserted that Alderman Moreno failed to stand up for the police stations, after initially vowing to fight to keep the stations open.

Anne Shaw has also received endorsements from the Asian American Action Fund and the endorsement of the Progressive Alliance. Shaw also received a motion to endorse from the “Northwest Chapter of the IVI-IPO.” After fierce debate within the organization, the IVI-IPO made no endorsement in the race.
