It is hard to say what makes a hit; sometimes it is the plot of a well written sitcom, sometimes it is the star power of the actors, sometimes the chemistry between the characters, and sometimes it has everything to do with the time slot. ‘2 Broke Girls’ could not have asked for a better time slot between ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (check out this week’s episode recap here) and ‘Two and a Half Men’(check out this week’s episode recap here) on CBS Monday nights, however, the plot has the potential of becoming very stale. This week’s episode was better than most of the episodes we have seen lately. Arizona fans would agree Caroline has not had the best year so no one can blame her for not wanting to celebrate her birthday, but BFF Max has a different agenda.
Max throws Caroline a surprise; we will call it a birthday party, that is uncomfortable for the cast as well as the audience at home. No music, no cake (not even a cupcake) was in attendance at the shindig; however, the one night stands Caroline and Sophie had the night before were. The only problem was the guys didn’t know they were one night stands, something both Sophie and Caroline asked Max to fix (while we didn’t see the fixing portion of the episode one would have to believe Max enjoyed that duty).
In Max’ unique style of listening she finally learned from Caroline all she really wanted this year for her birthday was to see daddy (who is locked away in prison). Max whisked Caroline away on a conjugal visit prison bus referred to as the ‘bang bus’ by the usual riders (which you can imagine produced the funniest scene of the episode as Caroline explained she was going to see daddy).
At the prison Max made a huge sacrifice to ensure Caroline would get her visit with her father, unfortunately after the guard searched her she met up with one of her own previous ‘one night stands’ who could have been cast from the ‘Kat Demming’ stalker pool wearing a full chest tattoo of Max with pride. He obviously didn’t handle rejection well the first time, you can imagine how bad he handled it this time. Just as the guards were bringing in Caroline’s father, Irish (Max’ one night stand) started throwing tables around and getting angry. The visitors were sent home as the guards worked on quieting down the mob. As Max apologized for ruining everyone’s visit; Caroline (ever the optimist) was simply thankful she saw her father for a brief second and he saw her. But BFF wasn’t done; she was going to make one last attempt to make this a happy birthday for Caroline as she convinced the bus driver to make a quick stop for ice cream cake. After the episode was done the girl’s saving went from $825 to $625. Happy birthday Caroline this one will go down in the most memorable file.

Overall, it was an average episode; the show had a large focus on sexual relationships this week and combining that with a visit to see daddy dearest is yet another example of pushing the boundaries that CBS is famous for. In the end, it was done in better taste than some others could have done which is why it rang in at a 3 out of 5 for this Examiner.
