Every music fan’s dream: consecutive days of non-stop live music, featuring bands of all genres, shapes and sizes are what music festivals are all about. Sometimes it takes place indoors at multiple venues within a city; other times it’s outdoors at the same place every day. Regardless of which one you attend, you always come back that much more in love with music. Here’s a look at what’s in store for the first half of 2012:
Canadian Music Fest – Toronto, ON – Mar 21-25
A great week of music in Toronto, showcasing over 900 artists from 40 countries playing in 60 different venues. Big names include I Mother Earth (reunited after eight years), Slash, Treble Charger and The Temper Trap. Click here for ticket and wristband information and to see the full roster of bands.
SXSW – Austin, TX – Mar 13-18
2,000 bands from over 50 different countries in 90 venues across downtown Austin, is South by Southwest. It attracts members from all walks of the music community, from unsigned bands, to music legends in a gathering featuring panels, workshops, interviews, speeches, trade shows, and of course, parties. This year’s keynote speaker is Bruce Springsteen himself and other speakers include Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Click here for the full list of bands. In order to get access to everything music related, you require a Music Badge. However, most bars and lounges (and even some churches) host bands every evening so if you’re in town for the weekend, just sit back, relax and enjoy.
Ultra Music Festival – Miami, FL – March 23-25
Imagine jamming to the greatest DJs spinning live under the Miami heat in the middle of March. A haven for anyone who has a little raver inside of them, Ultra features 400 DJs, bands and producers over three glorious days. Headliners include Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta and AVICII. Check out the full lineup. Although it’s currently sold out, tickets may come available closer to the date. Here’s hoping.
Lollapalooza Chile – Santiago, Chile – Mar 31-Apr 1
Only in its second year, a two day festival including headliners Foo Fighters, Bjork and other acts like MGMT, Arctic Monkeys, Foster the People and Band of Horses. Plus of course some international talent like Spanish reggae sensation Morodo. Check out the full lineup. Presale tickets currently available.
Lollapalooza Brazil – Sao Paulo, Brazil – Apr 7-8
A lot of the same bands performing in Chile are present at the first ever Lollapalooza in Brazil. The major differences are Bjork is replaced by Jane’s Addiction and Brazil showcases fewer bands on the bill. Either way, you’re spending a gorgeous weekend in either Brazil or Chile surrounded by live music. You can’t really lose here. For the full lineup click here . Tickets currently available.
Coachella – Indio, CA – April 13-15; April 20-22
This year Coachella has decided to showcase the same bands over two consecutive weekends. Headliners feature The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg. Other acts include Florence + the Machine, Bon Iver, The Weeknd and M83. Here’s the full lineup. Although tickets are already sold out for both weekends, if you manage to scrounge some up, please do. It’s one of the most known outdoor music festivals – it’s in the middle of nowhere in sunny California, and camping sites, trailers and port-a-potties are common sightings. There’s nothing listening to live music in the open air, surrounded by thousands of people who are there for the same reason. If you need any more convincing, celebrities always show up because I guess it’s the cool Hollywood thing to do; so you never know who you may run into.
Bamboozle Festival – Asbury Park, NJ – May 18-20
This year Bamboozle decided to return to where it was first held ten years ago. It’s a festival of the best in music and comedy. Headliners include Bon Jovi, Incubus and Foo Fighters; Blink 182, DJ Pauly D and Andrew Dice Clay will also make an appearance. Here’s the full lineup. Wristbands and single day passes are currently available. With a re-creation of a Skate and Surf, a B-Boy Competition, the beautiful oceanfront setting and live tunes, what better way to liven up a typical New Jersey summer?
Edgefest – Toronto, ON – July 14th
Courtesy of Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge, it’s held on a lovely July Saturday in Downsview park, this year’s Edgefest performers include Billy Talent, Silversun Pickups, USS, Young the Giant and The Sheepdogs. See here for more bands. Tickets currently available through Ticketmaster.
