For the first time in its 54-year history, the Daytona 500 was postponed from Sunday to Monday night at 7 p.m. ET – prime time NASCAR of FOX! The 2012 Daytona 500 became the second-most watched Daytona 500 in FOX Sports history, and with good reason – there was plenty of action on the track and online before the checkered flag final fell almost six hours later.
For Joe Gibbs Racing, the night ended with all three cars in the top 20. Denny Hamlin and new crew chief Darian Grubb came home fourth after starting 31st in the #11 FedEx Express Toyota Camry, while Joey Logano grabbed an important top 10 finish with his ninth-place run with the #20 Home Depot Toyota. Kyle Busch drove the #18 M&Ms Brown Toyota to a 17th-place finish after getting involved in the last wreck of the evening (or morning, depending on where you were) on Lap 196.
Matt Kenseth won his second Daytona 500, followed by Dale Earnhardt J. and Greg Biffle. Hamlin and Jeff Burton rounded out the top five.
In addition to the rain that pushed the start of the race back 36 hours and the long-awaited debut of Danica Patrick (who finished 38th after being involved in a Lap 2 accident triggered by Elliott Sadler and Jimmie Johnson), there are two other events that the 2012 Daytona 500 will be remembered for: Juan Pablo Montoya’s wicked wreck with one of the jet drier trucks that delayed the race for more than two hours and, as a result of the wreck, Brad Keselowski taking to Twitter during the delay, tweeting photos and answering questions for fans on the social media site. Keselowski increased his followers from 65,000 before the race to almost 200,000 during the delay.
NASCAR heads west to Phoenix, Arizona for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 this weekend, Friday through Sunday, March 2nd through 4th at Phoenix International Raceway. Follow the days leading up to the race at www.nascar.com and joegibbsracing.com.
