I just got a bike and rode it from San Diego to San Francsico and back, so I am going to write about what to to pack on a long ride to help you stay comfortable. When it’s just you, 2 wheels, and a long road, comfort can become a safety issue.
So here goes:
Top 5 things to pack for a long ride
5. Wet wipes.
Especially in hot weather, but they’re welcome any time. At a rest stop, you can wipe not just your ass, but your feet, pits, and face to get a little refresh and wake-me-up to help you soldier on. Our boys in Iraq know about this one.
4. A back brace.
Your back will get sore no matter what you do, but to minimize the pain, get a back brace. If you can’t afford a nice armored motorcycles brace, at least get a cheap one made for sports.
Wind will be whipping your face, even in a full face helmet. Cracked lips suck.
2. Ear plugs.
Better yet, custom made ear buds so you can listen to music on an mp3 player. It’s nice to clear your head and just listen to your thoughts, but listening to the wind for hours on end will make you hallucinate strange sounds. Plus it makes it harder to hear when you get off your bike – possibly permanently.
1. Good underwear.
For this last one, I’m bringing it back to where we started – your ass. You are going to be sitting on it for a very long time. If you’re underwear is bunching up, or in your crack, you will be hating life. They don’t call it the Iron Butt Rally for nothing.
