A dog named Barney went out jogging with his owner last week and ended up swimming for his life in the Gulf of Mexico. After a 22 year old driver hit and killed Barney’s owner, 53 year old Donna Chen, Barney was so frightened and in shock he ran nearly a mile to the Gulf. He then started swimming for his life until a fisherman found him coming towards his Kayak in desperate need of help. The dog was shivering with cuts all over his body but otherwise physically in good shape.
The driver of the vehicle, Talman, the 22 year old was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Donna Chen of Siesta Key Florida, leaves behind a husband and three children. The dog is now home with his family and recovering from the horrible incident, that has left the community in shock.
It has been a proven fact that animals have the same emotions and reactions as people do when put in a stressful and frightening situation, as Barney was. Barney’s first instinct was to run from danger, after witnessing his owner’s death. He not only ran but swam for his life, luckily a Kayaker was in the right place at the right time.
