The Washington Chorus recently hosted a unique opportunity for choral music lovers to get a closer look at the Stabat Mater by Antonin Dvořák. It was refreshing to watch the singers of the chorus engaged in an interesting discussion about the work with music director Julian Wachner. Many aspects about the work was addressed such as the structure, harmonic texture and social vogues that perhaps influenced his compositional style.
Maestro Christoph Eschenbach will lead the National Symphony Orchestra, The Washington Chorus and guest soloists in the work in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, beginning March 22-24. Eschenbach will be joined by soprano Anne Schwanewilms, contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, tenor Steve Davislim, and bass Burak Bulgili.
Several years ago under former director Robert Shafer, the chorus recorded the work on the NAXOS label. The upcoming concert is a part of the festival: The Music of Budapest, Prague and Vienna, which will end March 29.
