Nick Santino committed suicide last week hours after euthanizing his beloved pet, Rocco. The handsome actor/director/writer took his own life after putting his healthy pit-bull to sleep on Tuesday.
According to reports, some neighbors in the actor’s Upper West Side condo had complained the dog was loud and aggressive while others said it was Santino who was being harassed. In 2010, the building implemented strict new dog regulations which did not apply to dogs already in the building. The building management company has not released a statement.
Santino rescued the dog from an animal shelter several years ago but said it was the dog who actually rescued him! Overcome with grief, Santino left a suicide note, “Today I betrayed my best friend. Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.” Police found Santino’s body in his bedroom after an apparent overdose on Wednesday, January 25th, one day after his birthday. Nick Santino had just turned 47 years old.
Santino was born in Brooklyn on January 24, 1965. At just five months old, he was placed in an orphanage. Despite a less than stable childhood, he put himself through college and earned his Engineering Degree and received an MBA in Financial Information Systems from St. Peter’s College. Using his Engineering background, he was part of a team to assist in the search and rescue effort during the World Trade Center’s 9/11 tragedy.
He went on to act in theater and television and wrote, produced and directed the short film, Steel Crossings. While Santino was best known for his roles in several television soap operas including All My Children and Guiding Light, recent roles included stints on Royal Pains and Gossip Girl. He served as President and Founder of Argentto Systems, Inc. in his “real day job.”
Photos of the actor in happier times can be seen on his Google +1 page. His Facebook page says, “Just happy someone remembered to invite me to the party.” How sad.
