LOS ANGELES – The 2011 Grammys were filled with great (and not so great) performances and Grammy category sweeps by some performers who won nearly every award they were nominated for. Adele and Tony Bennet won all of the Grammys they were nominated for.
Adele won 6 Grammys for Record of the Year ‘Rolling in the Deep’, Album of the Year ’21’, Song of the Year ‘Rolling in the Deep’, Best Pop Solo Performance ‘Someone Like You’, Best Pop Vocal Album ’21’, and Best Short Form Video for ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Adele’s producer Paul Epworth also won for Producer of theYear in part for his work with Adele.
Nice girl Taylor Swift gave a great performance of mean. She won two of the categories in which she was nominated. ‘Mean’ won for Best Country Solo Performance and for Best Country Song. However ‘Speak Now’ did not win in the Best Country Album category.
Tony Bennett won 3 Grammys for the evening for his album of duets. ‘Body and Soul’ with Amy Winehouse won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Duets II won for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. The album won in additional category, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for ‘Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)’ Jorge Calandrelli, arranger (Tony Bennett & Queen Latifah).
Skrillex lost the Best New Artist category to Bon Iver, but still walked away with some great awards. Skrillex won with ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ for Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album, Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical ‘Cinema (Skrillex Remix)’. Skrillex also lost out in the Best Short Form Video category – but he lost out to Adele who just couldn’t be beat. He remained humble to the core, thanking friends who let him stay on their couches after he got kicked out of the apartment he squatted in as he told the audience in the Grammys Pre-Telecast.
Foo Fighters walked home with all of their nominations, a total of four. ‘Walk’ won for Best Rock Performance. The song ‘White Limo’ won for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. They won for Best Long Form Video for ‘Foo Fighters; Back and Forth.’ And their album ‘Wasting Light’ won for Best Rock Album. They celebrated by performing as much as they could at an outdoor performance and inside Staples Center with Sir Paul McCartney.
Bon Iver won two grammys. One was for Best Alternative Album and the other was for Best New Artist.
Kanye West walked out with 4 Grammys and no appearance. Were people afraid of how he would behave after his last run-in with Taylor Swift? Was Kanye banned? His awards were for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ‘All of the Lights’, Best Rap Song ‘All Of The Lights’, and Best Rap Album ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.’ The song ‘Otis’ won for Best Rap Song.
Cee Lo Green’s duet partner, Melanie Fiona accepted both Grammys they won on his behalf. Cee Lo was missing in action. The song ‘Fool For You’ won for both Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R & B Song.
Newcomers The Civil Wars won two awards. Their single ‘Barton Hollow’ won for Best coutry Duo/Group Performance. The album ‘Barton Hollow’ won for Best Folk Album. It could have easily placed in the Americana category. If it had, it would have won that also.
Jazz great Chick Corea went home with 2 Grammys.
Sometimes great artists are completely shut out of winning a Grammy Award. Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry were shut out of the awards this year. They accepted this graciously. 3 of them were honored with performing at the awards. Lady Gaga didn’t wow with wild antics this year.
