Jan, 27, 2012 – Columbia Pictures finally released the complete synopsis of the new Amazing Spider-Man movie. This is pretty big because the studio needs to find a way to convince fans to revisit a superhero origin story that they already saw less than a decade ago.
Those in the Oklahoma City area can pre-order their tickets for both movies here.
Synopsis: Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story … “The Amazing Spider-Man” is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

This is all a pretty big deal actually. None of the Sam Raimi directed movies said anything about Peter’s parents and this one looks like it will go full speed on that part of the hero’s past. The movie takes us back to his high school days, so that will make it something different as well.
For those who don’t read the Spider-Man comic books, Peter’s parents were utilized in a story line as they apparently were members of S.H.I.E.L.D. (the same organization from the upcoming Avengers movie) and were lost in a mission and setup to appear as traitors.

Because the Avengers and Spider-Man are under different studio units, it looks like the Amazing Spider-Man will go with the Ultimate Marvel Universe origin of Peter’s parents. In the Ultimate Universe, Richard Parker was a scientist who worked on the Super Soldier Serum (yeah, the same one from Captain America). This can also explain why Peter is so smart. Of course, they can’t mention Cap either because of studio differences.
In the Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker died so this also opens up the chance for the movie franchise to branch out down the line if they choose.
The Amazing Spider-Man opens on July 3, 2012.
