Las Vegas is a huge metropolis. No one realizes how vast it really is until you attempt to cross town during the middle of the day. Living in Henderson, it takes you over three quarters of an hour to get to the West/Northwest side of Vegas, but the trip is well worth the effort.
Having made that daunting drive yesterday, it’s a pleasure to report that there are also some wonderful sites for children’s activities in that part of town. The most memorable was “King Putt Mini Golf.”
This is an older facility, nestled into a shopping mall, but it is excellent: very highly rated by parents and children. A walk-through proved a real experience in black light and imaginative decorating. Even in the early afternoon, children were there playing mini golf with their parents, a table was set up in the party room for a birthday party expected to soon arrive, and the young person manning the desk was friendly, courteous and enthusiastic.
The course itself was a bit cramped (given space limitations) but it had everything kids love, from octopi and fish, to a “jungle,” complete with a huge blue ape, “King Putt,” and other fantastic creatures. The black light really adds to the experience, giving an unearthly glow to everything along the course. And the meandering holes made this even more fun.
After absorbing the ambience for about half an hour, taking many photos and watching the families play, we headed to the other end of the parking lot. There hid a sub place called “Firehouse Subs.” This can be summed up in one word: wow! Here is a franchise Sub place which was originally opened in Florida, by Fire Fighters who had witnessed the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It has everything: history, firefighting decor, a multitude of bottles of a mind-boggling array of hot sauces, a DIY beverage dispenser at which you can concoct over a hundred drink combinations. And those subs were delicious! Children can even get a kids’ combo, complete with a fire hat! Every huge “pickle bucket” sold (for $2) generates revenue for the Firefight’s Public Safety Foundation which benefits any number of charities and projects throughout the US. The staff was young, friendly, accommodating and more than willing to talk about the history of their workplace. One server even gave drink tips (hint: add seltzer to the cherry limeade with the hand-squeezed limes)!
This was a totally enjoyable afternoon, well spent investigating an unfamiliar part of town. It goes to show that even locals don’t know everything about Las Vegas!
