At no time will my fingers leave my hands! Ok, so it works better coming from Houdini rather than us mere architects, but the concept isn’t as far ‘off’ as you might think…read on!
As I illuded to in my FF & E Tricks of the Trade story, manipulating space is what we architects do best. Be it tall wainscots, or 3-legged chairs, we can change your lives! And believe it or not, we do it because we want to help you! And because we ARE listening to you in all those darn meetings!
So here’s a little more about what we do when it comes to solving those difficult design problems that always seem to surface…and yes, they really do come in handy! And if your ‘really’ into finding out more about the magic of our profession, take a stroll through the one of GR’s Barnes & Nobel architecture sections and pick up your fav book on one of the truly ‘nobel’ professions still left in this world!
Whether it’s a phony thermostat in your office, to phony mullions on a skyscraper, to exageratted columns at the base of many buildings…deciept can quite often be the design solution necessary to keep your minds at ease!
For those phony themrostats that you turn up thinking it’s going to be warmer? Well, I hate to break it to you, some are not hooked up at all, or have a limit on how much you can actually adjust it! It not only keeps the occupant happy cuz they think it’s about to get warmer, but it helps keep the energy cost down as well!
And those phony mullions that make it look like the glass is held in place? Actually they’re just surface treatments to make you think they’re holding the glass in place, and won’t come flyin off the building when it gets windy!
And tapered columns at the base of many buildings? Yes, we flare them out to make them appear stronger, the result is an illusion that lets your EYE make them stand up! Okay, be honest here…if a building looks ‘flimsy’, would you really want to go inside?
So the next time you find yourself in a ‘pickle’ over some problem you’re having…run it past your favorite architect; who knows, they might actually surprise you, and give you a ‘real’ solution!
