It’s 2012. Tick-tock. The mind can be a dangerous place, especially at night. Too dangerous for the weak of heart. As though tiptoeing through a minefield, one has to traverse the thoughts and dreams carefully. But, if you’re the adventurous type and you want to take a nocturnal stroll past the detached thoughts and words of the mundane and ordinary, then you might just find yourself waking up in your dreams to the music of Flipron. And what a delightful world it is.
Flipron is a pop/psychedelic/indie band from the U.K. whose music is described as psychedelic, honky-tonk, twangy, lively, bluesy, and danceable. No one really gets it right. Their music cannot be pigeonholed. At all. Flipron is the most unique band I’ve ever known. Their music is hallucinatory and hypnotic, sometimes dark, strange and altogether mystical and mysterious. It’s sometimes it’s light and bubbly, and as effervescent as champagne spewing in a fountain. It’s always melodic, harmonic, and otherworldly. It just is. There’s a new movie about vampires called Dark Shadows, coming out in 2012. (It’s actually based on an old U.S. TV show). Flipron’s music should be in it. In fact, their music should be in every Tim Burton movie that’s ever made as well as all the Pirate of the Caribbean movies featuring Johnny Depp. Their song “Book of Lies” would be perfect.
Well, we don’t want to hear tall stories
About all those people
You say that you’ve met
About the great stuff you’ve got
Or what you used to have
Or those things that you’re going to get
We don’t need to dazzle, astounded
Shocked or impressed
Amazed or hypnotized
Sit down have a drink
And stop reading aloud
From that book of lies.
And friendship dies
It’s you we love
It’s not your book of lies.
The main members of the band are Joe, Mike and Jesse. John and Tom play bass, filling in for the other when one isn’t available. They are all brilliant, multitalented and play multiple instruments. Jesse stands on chairs when he sings. Yes, I think they’re a little mad. They live in those places where the mind is dangerous and welcomes monsters and fairies alike. If you can, go see them perform live. Yes, their CDs are wonderful to listen to, but their live performances will take you to those dangerous places of the mind that are not for the weak of heart…especially at night.
Flipron will be performing at the Mineral Line at Roadwater Village Hall in Watchet in Somerset. The Mineral Line is well known for its varied programs of lively dance nights and entertaining supper evenings. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the admission fee is £7.
Please see their website, www.flipron.co.uk, to order CDs and merchandise, and to learn about more upcoming tour dates. And, come back to this column regularly for any news about Flipron touring in the U.S. in 2012. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
