Vampires: Creatures of the night. The deadly sexual encounters of the darkest nights. The romantic ideas of writers and screen-writers. The tingling feeling I get when I watch these men and women as they follow their victims and kiss deeply into that special place in the back of their victim’s nape. Vampires, the monsters that everyone loves to hate, and hate to love.
That is the general idea of what vampires are, but they are also the cruelest non-mortals to walk the earth. They charm their victims into death. They tear apart their victims necks with the sharpest of tools, fingers and teeth. They are so cruel in their death. They don’t just die, they either melt to bone; blood is thrown up all over the killer or they pretend death to come back later and kill again and again. Ahh, Vampires, my favorite kind of non-mortals.
I been researching for the pass couple of weeks to get this list together. I had a marathon night last weekend with a group of friends to make up my mind what my top ten list. I have seen so many great, and so many not so great movies relating to the vampire world that I had to rewatch movies over again to really be sure on what I wanted. So with no more further delay, my top ten list of movies in no order.
A group of highly sexual teens decide to visit the most outlandish strip club in their town. Little did they know that the strippers were all hot, gorgeous vampires. Grace Jones stars in this movie as the main vampire. She holds men in her arms till she crushes them in her embrace of last love. The movie is funny in parts, mainly towards the end when the boys are running from the vampires. This movie was a sleeper at the box office, but a hit in my list.
A vampire killer that is a vampire, and a damned good looking one at that. This movie has a lot of action in it. Not just a kill the vampire movie as some people think. Wesley Snipes plays the main character and he was the best pick for this movie. I love the music, the action, the killing scenes and of course the story-line. There is a sequel coming out, and I will be the first in line for this movie.
3: Interview with a Vampire
This movie has a lot going for it. The story starts out basically with a vampire telling a reporter about his life but in whole, you get the love story between the two vampires. Some people would say, love story? I say yes. I loved the costumes, the music and the complete story. The ending surprised me. I thought for sure that it would have ended differently so that there could have been a sequel, but it still was excellent. The make-up of Lestat was also great. For that reason alone, I would recommend this movie to others.
4: Bram Stoker’s Dracula
A re-make of the original Dracula. More involved then the book written by Bram Stoker. This movie held some of my favorite actors, Oldman, and Ryder, to name a couple. The computer graphics in this movie held my attention. The dark love story and the sadness of the vampire. The make-up job on Oldman was pure genius. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought they were all different actors. The scenery, ahh the scenery. From the dark castle to Lucy’s garden. I simple love this movie, the book…the whole concept of love carrying on even after death.
5: Dracula (1922)
Bela is the one and only real Count Dracula for me. This movie holds a special place in my part. It is the kind of horror, the king of vampire movies and the king of shadows. This movie is made surrounded by the deep shadows of the characters and the homeplace of Dracula. It isn’t as tight to the book as the one above but it still keeps with the theme. This is a movie that I highly recommend everyone to see before they close their eyes for the last time.
6 Dusk to Dawn
From the opening scene to the closing scene this movie is the grossiest, bloodiest vampire movie I have ever seen. There isn’t one thing about this movie I don’t like. From the kidnapping of the straight lace family to the fighting scenes in the bar, this movie has it all. Love, sex, hate, drama, and of course…horror! Not a movie for the weak stomach. Have to recall my one of my favorite scenes: the crotch that becomes a gun. And that is all I am telling you, you got to see this movie to see it!
7: Andy Warhols Dracula
A bit sexy and a bit gorey. I adore this movie for the strange way that Warhol turned a horror classic into one of his surreal films. Not a big catcher for people. But I really must say that if you never seen a Warhol movie, then this is the movie to see. It will bring you into a world of strange characters, strange stories and weird dialogue.
I could actually say all of the Subspecies films are in this group, but will stick with the first movie. There is two vampires in this movie, the good brother and the wicked brother. One is gorgeous, the other is gorey looking. A group of female students visiting in the country find a dark mysterious castle and awaken the bad brother. The good brother of course, rescues the girls, or one of the girls, I won’t tell.
This movie was a sleeper at the box office, but at video stores it is hard to get, it is always out. This is a movie that will appeal to the vampire fan in all of us. You get the icky bloody parts but you get the great love scenes with a yummy looking man.
9: To Die For 2
I like the second story of this series then I did the first one. This story relates to a doctor that is a vampire but he will not drink the blood of people (unless it comes in a plastic bag). A woman brings in a crying baby and he realizes that the baby is one of his kind. He gets involved in this woman’s life so he can help the baby, but of course, his evil brother shows up and he must battle him for her. This is a great story that also pulls on her heartstrings.
10: The Town After Sunset
If you can find this movie, get it! A whole town of vampires but you would never know it since they wander around during the day to fool people who show up. This movie is a bit cheesy and the acting is not the greatest, but the whole concept of a town of vampires that don’t kill is cool. This movie came out way before Salem’s Lot and I think is much better. Of course, there has to be a rebellion so that the vampires can fight and drink blood, but it a fun and not too bloody movie to watch.
