The competition is heating up on season two of The Voice as coaches Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine duke it out to build the best possible vocal teams. On part four of the blind auditions for The Voice, one contestant, Charlotte Sometimes, got all four coaches to turn their chairs around.
Charlotte Sometimes is a 23 year old woman from New Jersey who almost didn’t get to pursue her dream of singing. Diagnosed with a jaw disease at a young age, Charlotte was told that she may never sing. Charlotte’s determination, however, saw her through a surgery on her jaw and gave her the ability to shine on The Voice.
Charlotte Sometimes version of OneRepublic’s Apologize was strong, but also unusual. Her sound, so different from other singers, made quite an impression on the coaches. Before Charlotte Sometimes even had a chance to realize her dreams were coming true, she had four coaches fighting over her.
Christina Aguilera commented, “You were great. You were strong the whole way through. I was wondering because we hear some voices that start off really strong and then start fading away.”
Blake Shelton interrupted with, “Hey Charlotte, I never wondered like Christina did because my job as a coach is to hear it, understand it and within the first few lines I knew what I was hearing. I think we all gravitate to unique vocalists. That’s what you are, I think you’re very special.”
Blake Shelton went on to sell his team, saying, “You have a quality in your voice that reminds me of a girl named Xenia that I worked with last year. She and I had a pretty good run. Xenia has a record deal now. I’m just sayin’… You know, if you’re in to that type of thing.”
Cee Lo Green told Charlotte that she was “like a flower, very graceful and poised.”
Adam Levine said, “I thought you were amazing. You’re so unique.”
Charlotte Sometimes, who exuded confidence in her singing and in her speaking with the judges, took a few seconds to collect her thoughts. She then announced, “I’m making a decision that I didn’t think I was going to make… Blake.”
Blake Shelton was really excited to have won the shootout among four coaches and welcomed Charlotte Sometimes onto his team with much enthusiasm. He hugged her and told her it was going to be a lot of fun, but as Charlotte Sometimes walked off stage, Blake Shelton couldn’t resist pointing his fingers at the other coaches and laughing. He indeed had quite the victory given that Charlotte Sometimes could have chosen any coach she wanted.
In addition to Charlotte Sometimes, Blake Shelton filled three more spots on his team. Team Blake picked up Naia Kete, a street performer whose earthy version of The Lazy Song got both Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green’s attention. Naia Kete said that though she had intended to go with Cee Lo Green if given the chance, her gut was telling her to go with Blake Shelton. Blake Shelton also acquired country singer Jordan Rager and rocker, ALyX who sang Pink’s Just Like A Pill.
On next week’s edition of The Voice, the contestants will have their work cut out for them as each coach is down to their final few slots open on their teams. The Voice airs on NBC on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. Central.
