Simultaneously affording viewers a look at both how far flight films have come since the late twenties to what has been conceptually conceded in the ever moving forward realistic eye vs. CGI trade-off, Wings bolts onto Blu-ray with a brilliantly blazing restoration and full HD special features.
And while the film may indeed; at times, date itself and its content – and is perhaps also guilty of underutilizing its main draw Clara Bow – when all is said and done and the credits roll viewers are left with little doubt as to why this hazardous high-flying gem snagged the first Oscar for Best Picture.
Capturing peerless flight scenes that have yet to be rivaled in realism and containing some of the best performances – even a fledgling Gary Cooper can be seen – ever to exist in the silent film catalog, Wings thrills, spills and chills you to the core as the harrowing events of love amidst the bomb blasts unfolds.
Propelling the set even further – and all in HD – three extremely informative and entertaining extras are also on board, including an enlightening look at the early days of the film and of 1920’s film production, an impressive segment devoted to the film’s restoration and the painstaking process of reconstructing a tattered soundtrack, and a twelve+ minute look into the high-flying tactics and transports that littered the smoke-filled air of WWI.
So with a wonderful nod to WWI flair and nail-biting realism taken to the air, Wings is cockpit chaos at its pressed and stressed break-neck best.
