The new Marvel omnibus, featuring Jack Kirby’s run of Captain America, is a mixed bag for sure. The art work is astounding and anyone familiar with Kirby’s work would expect. The problem with this volume is the stories. To say they are uneven would be a bit of an understatement, Kirby puts cap into some kooky 70’s style adventures that often seem forced or just plain comical. Captain America vs Buddha stands out as one of the better ones, while at the other end they just defy explanation.
So is this omnibus a buy or a pass, that depends on the reader. The hardcore Kirby or Cap fan will find this hard to live without, the average reader though will probably find this to be a little to fringe for thier tastes. The only advice I will give is that if you are going to get do so soon, before it becomes collectible, the Howard the Duck omnibus from Marvel was also fringe and now sells for over $200 on the secondary market.
