As a responsible pet parent, the care and health of your dog is of utmost importance. Throughout their playful inquisitive lives, your dog can be prone to various conditions affecting their health, and ear infections are on the top of the list of medical issues with your pet. Dogs that have long floppy ears are more prone to ear problems although no dog is exempt. It is important that you know the signs and symptoms as well as care and maintenance in order to prevent ear infections. It may be advisable to speak with the staff at your loal Rockford Petsmart or Petco (or one closest to your home) regarding the necessities you can use to safe care for your dog’s ears.
Ear infections in dogs are caused by bacteria, fungus and parasites. Laboratory test can determine the cause of a dog’s ear infection if you suspect there is a problem. Dogs prone to ear infections most often, as mentioned, are those with floppy ears as well as dogs with allergies, any autoimmune disease, generalized skin disease, trauma to the ears, water and hair in the ears. Some breeds of dog are more predisposed to ear infections, although any dog of any age can be affected. Ear infections are more common in humid weather or during the summer months.
Some of the signs that your dog has an ear infection usually begins with an odor, head tilting or shaking, noticeable discharge coming from the ears, redness, swelling and noticeable pain when you touch your dog’s ears. Obviously once you have noticed your dog has an ear problem, it will be necessary to get a diagnosis from your veterinarian as to the cause in order to prescribe a treatment plan.
Treating your dog’s ear infection will begin with a proper cleaning. For a more severe infection, your veterinarian may choose to clean the ears or have them flushed out at the vet hospital before starting treatment. Once you get your dog home, you will be instructed how to continue the cleanings. After doing so you will probably be prescribed a medication in the form of drops to place in the ears as directed. On occasion you may be prescribed systemic therapy for pain, antibiotics, antifungal therapy or anti-allergy therapy, dependent upon the cause of your dog’s ear infection.
Continue the treatment prescribed until the ear is completely healed and the infection has subsided. Your veterinarian knows best how long the treatment should last in order to clear up the problem. If your dog is one that gets frequent ear infections, be sure to clean the ears often and monitor them in order to catch the problem within the ear before it escalates. Cleaning your dog’s ears regularly with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol works well to keep the ears in a healthy condition while preventing further infections. Although this solution can maintain your dog’s ears while preventing further infection, it will not remedy a full-fledged ear problem. For the health of your dog’s ears, clean them regularly, and your dog will be much happier.
