This series of eight articles describes meditation techniques to strengthen and balance each of the major energy centers of the body. Each article has a brief introduction followed by self-help techniques for a particular chakra. The introduction is the same for each article so important information is not omitted. Remember that change is a process that requires daily commitment, focus and patience to create remarkable changes.
Introduction to the Chakras
If you are not familiar with the human energy system known as the chakras, you can read a brief introduction here.
Sacral (second) chakra – associated color, orange
This chakra is located in the lower abdomen, between the root chakra and the navel. The sacral chakra is rooted in the spinal column at the first lumbar vertebra, and it energizes the ovaries in women and the spleen in men. Orange is the color that influences the sacral chakra. Orange stimulates your desire and appetite for all things, including food, sex, music, etc., regulates the use of fluids in your body, and feeds your sense of well-being, abundance and satisfaction.
The sacral chakra governs your appetite and desire. Fueled by a strong sacral chakra, you will experience more happiness and joy in your life. People with a vibrant sacral chakra are cheerful, positive, joyful and optimistic. They look on the bright side, tend to make positive interpretations of situations, and interact pleasantly with others.
This chakra also fuels your appetite for life’s gifts! You participate enthusiastically in life. You welcome new situations. A toned second chakra drives your willingness and enjoyment of everything you engage in! People with strong sacral chakras eagerly participate in life—they enjoy the taste of food, the smell of flowers, the sight of their loved ones, the feel of the sun on their skin, the singing of birds, and more. They want to be right in the middle of life, enjoying every minute!
At the same time, however, they realize when they have had enough! They eat only to the point of being full, for example. They don’t overdo it or go too far. They experience a feeling of satisfaction and know when to stop!
With a toned sacral chakra, you draw more abundance to yourself. You experience the blessings of life. You have more fun; you more fully enjoy your life in subtle and powerful ways.
I’ve talked with my guides about whether a toned sacral chakra influences financial abundance. They’ve told me that people with extreme wealth are much more likely to have toned root chakras, as well as strength in the chakra I’ll be discussing in the next article—the “purity” chakra (my name for it) which is associated with the color brown.
Abundance as it is used here relates to life experiences in and of themselves—friendships, adventures, sensory encounters, love of your job, sexual ecstasy, appetite for food, etc.

- Recovering from grief and feelings of loss
- Moderating feelings of depression and sadness
- Reacquainting yourself with the real reason you decided to experience a physical life—your desire to enjoy your physical life
Sacral chakra meditation
Lie down or sit comfortably. Your spine should be straight and in alignment. Close your eyes and breathe in a relaxed fashion. Many people breathe deeply because it is more relaxing and at the same time, more energizing. Belly breathing is great. Imagine that you are expanding your diaphragm downward (toward your feet) as you breathe. This allows the lungs to more fully expand. If you try to breathe deeply and do not allow the air to flow into the lower part of your lungs, your ribcage will keep your lungs from expanding to maximum capacity and your breaths will be shallower.
Image a stream of orange energy entering your sacral chakra. Welcome the energy as a gift of pleasure and joy. Allow the energy to collect in your sacral chakra until you can feel a strong, pleasant vibration.
Direct your attention to this feeling of energy, and if possible, visualize the color orange filling the area from about three to four inches below your waist to your waistline. Focus on the energy and the color for as long as you can. Start with a couple of minutes, and set a goal to focus for longer as your meditation skills improve. If your mind drifts, just gently notice and return to concentrating on the pleasant vibration and the color orange.
Orange energy is pleasing and comfortable, so there is only a small risk of overdoing it and meditating for too long or too frequently. However, only you know how much time you will need on any particular day, so be flexible and key into your intuition and the signs coming to you from your physical body.
If you begin to find it difficult feel satisfied, in other words, if you experience cravings that are difficult to satisfy, you’ll know you’ve stimulated the chakra too much and you have exhausted the energy supply of the sacral chakra. Cut back or eliminate the meditation until you stabilize.
Optional add-on for a meditation focusing on any chakra
Energy moves from the root chakra up through the spine through each chakra to the crown chakra on the top of the head. When the targeted chakra is vibrating strongly and you begin to key into the increase in energy of the chakra above the one you are focusing on, shift your attention to the next chakra and continue your meditation as you focus on this next chakra’s color and personal qualities until you have energized all of your chakras.
Sacral chakra affirmations
As you become more skillful at feeling the energy in a chakra and visualizing the associated color, feel free to add affirmations into your meditation.
The sacral chakra gives us a positive outlook, happiness, feelings of eagerness about life, and the capacity to feel satisfied and know we’ve had enough of any experience. If your desire is to improve your life in any way that draws upon these qualities, use your intuition to develop appropriate affirmations that you can repeat either out loud or silently in your head as you focus on the orange energy filling your sacral chakra. Here are some examples:
- I’m first in line to try any new experience!
- I love starting conversations with new people!
- I take in all the sensory experiences around me. I love the smell of baking bread, the touch of a cat’s fur, the intricate cloud formations in the sky. I engage with my world and learn who I am.
- There are so many wonderful opportunities for me in my life; I won’t waste my chances to experience them!
Disclaimer: You should use your intuition to determine when a particular meditation is appropriate for you. Seek the advice of a trained professional if you are using meditations to treat physical illness. More successful results for any type of desired change are generally obtained by using a multi-faceted approach which may include meditation, diet, lifestyle, spiritual practice, exercise, and consultation with health care professionals, when appropriate.
