In part three of the girls basketball section preview, the eight Class AA sections will be examined. Because of the large number of schools in each section, some subsection play began last week. So here’s who’s left standing in each section.
In Section 1,the top seeded Caledonia Warriors remains alive in the East subsection and goes against Lewiston-Altura. Second seeded Chatfield takes on third seeded Stewartville. In the West Subsection, top seeded Pine Island was eliminated by Zumbrota-Mazeppa. They will face Stewartville. Who will come out of this section? It’s a toughie.
The St. Peter Saints and the NRHEG Panthers are the top two seeds in Section 2. NRHEG stands for New Richland, Hartland, Ellendale and Geneva and the unbeaten Panthers have an outstanding sophomore guard in Carlie Wagner. She averages 23 points per game. They look like the team to beat but there’s also Blue Earth and Southland in contention.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and the Worthington Trojans are the top two seeds remaining in Section 3. After years in Class AAA, Worthington drops to AA but could it be beneficial for the Trojans or will LC-WM make the trip up Highway 169 to Target Center?
The top seed in Section 4 is last year’s Class AA runnerup the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks. Seeded second is the Minneapolsi Washburn Millers. Both have identical 17-8 records. The Millers have won nine of their last 10 games and have a good chance of ending the Redhawks section reign. Also, look out for third seeded Concordia Academy-Roseville.
Looking at Section 5, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted is the north subsection’s top seed but take a look at the South bracket, which has the top seeded Providence Academy Lions, the second seeded Watertown-Mayer Royals and the third seeded Jordan Jaguars. Will the Royals Marissa Janning close out her career on a high note or will the Lions roar their way back to state? It’s a section worth watching.
The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters and New London-Spicer Wildcats are the top two seeds in Section 6. Melrose and Litchfield are contenders looking to put a roadblock in the Mainstreeters return to the tournament.
The top seeds in Section 7 are the defending Class AA champion Braham Bombers and the Esko Eskomos. The Bombers are led by one of the state’s top players Rebekah Dahlman. She will be the key to the Bombers title defense or will the Eskomos freeze their chances of returning.
And in Section 8, the Crosby-Ironton Rangers and the Hawley Nuggets are the top seeds. In order for the Nuggets to go for the gold, they will have to cool of a hot Pelican Rapids Vikings team that’s won seven in a row.
The final part will look at the Class A sections.
