Here comes part two of a four part preview of the state girls basketball sections. Next to me examined is Class AAA.
The top seed in Section 1 is the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets. They have been a very dominate team this season and they have a great chance to head up Highway 52 to state. Second seeded Red Wing is in its first season under head coach Dave Muelken and they have a lot of talent, including his seventh grade daughter McKayla.
Section 2 is a tough one to pick since there are four teams that cound win it. Top seeded Hutchinson, led by veteran head coach Andy Rostberg, second seeded Mankato East has been hot, winning 15 games in a row and third seeded New Prague. Also in the hunt is the fourth seeded Marshall Tigers. This could be interesting.
The top seeded team in Section 3 is the defending state champion DeLaSalle Islanders. Head coach Faith Johnson Patterson has a lot of returning players and they have the experience for a return trip to Target Center. The Totino-Grace Eagles are seeded second and the Park Center Pirates have the three seed.
One thing the top two teams in Section 4 have in common is that they’re both from the Classic Suburban Conference. The top seeded Simley Spartans and the second seeded Hill-Murray Pioneers. Could Simley make the trip from Inver Grove Heights or will Hill-Murray, led by Tessa Cichy clinch another state tournament berth?
The Monticello Magic are the top seed in Section 5, followed by the only other team with a winning record in the section, Dassel-Cokato.
There are two really good teams in Section 6AAA but only one will head to state. Top seeded Richfield, led by Jessica January and second seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Can January and her Richfield cohorts survive the Ides of March and end BSM’s section dominance? Or will third seeded Waconia emerge.
So far, it’s been an outstanding season for Chisago Lakes girls athletics. Last week, the girls hockey team won the Class A consolation title and this week the girls basketball team has the top seed in Section 7. Led by Whitney Tinjum, the Wildcats have won six in a row. They’ll have to stay hot or will second seeded Grand Rapids or third seeded North Branch cool them off?
In Section 8, The top seeded Fergus Falls Otters have been one of the state’s top teams this season and hope to keep the momentum going en route to state. Alexandria and Thief River falls are also contenders.
Next are the remaining teams in the Class AA sections that began play last week.
