Lake Geneva 4K students embraced their love of reading this month at the Star Center 4K Family Fun Day. Each student brought their favorite book to cuddle up and read with their families. When they were all done reading their books, they were asked what their favorite part of the book was. Each student, with the help of a family member, wrote down their favorite part and drew a picture that represented that scene. All of the pages were collected and will eventually be used in class to create one book.
This is a great idea for families at home too. Each time you and your child read a book, have them explain what their favorite part is. Help them write it down on a sheet of paper. (If they haven’t learned all of their letters yet, you can write it for them, but have them trace the letters.) Have them draw a picture that relates to their favorite part. Once you have collected 10 or so pages,or as many as you would like, have your child help you put them in order so the sentences make sense for a story.
Have your child come up with a title for this new book. On a new sheet of paper, create the cover for this book. Have your child write the title and draw a picture on the cover. Use a hole-punch to punch holes on the left side of all the pages. Tie the pages together with yarn or string. You now have a homemade book, created by you and your child, to enjoy reading.
Most likely, the story you have created will be pretty goofy and get a good laugh out of the entire family. This project helps make reading fun for your child, and promotes a lifetime of learning.
