Many Bangor area families participate in recycling. This helps reduce waste that goes to the local dump. A lot of the materials that are recycled can be reused. The following are some ideas on how to reuse clear glass bottles of any shape. These ideas make great gifts for parents and grandparents, and can be used to decorate the home.
Long necked, glass bottles can be recycled and used as candle holders. Wash the bottles and let them dry. Choose a taper candle for each glass jar you are recycling. The bottom of the taper candles should fit nicely into the openings located on the tops of the bottles. If you use candles that drip wax, the melted wax will dry and stick to the sides of the bottles. The melted wax decorates the bottle.
Any glass jar can be used as a vase for flowers. Colored jars work the best, but other jars can be painted by using paint brushes and acrylic paints. These vases can be used to hold real, or fake, flowers. Place the decorative flower holders in windows, or on tables, throughout the home.
Sand and Shells
Decorative bottles can be made by filling a jar with sand and shells. Add a layer of sand from your favorite beach to the bottom of a jar. Next, add a layer of small shells. Continue to add layers of sand and shells until the bottle is full.
Note: Small children should not use candles. Parents should light the candles and keep them in a place where children cannot reach them.
Fake flowers can and taper candles, can be purchased at the Bangor A.C. Moore store.
