In one of the worst-kept secrets around here in a long time, Duke center Elizabeth Williams has been named ACC rookie of the year for women’s basketball.
UNC is also represented on the five-player all-freshman unit, as guard Brittany Rountree was selected to the team by the Blue Ribbon Panel and announced Tuesday by the conference.
The other honorees are Clemson wing Nikki Dixon, Georgia Tech guard Sydney Wallace and Maryland’s Brene Moseley.
Williams, who also made first-team All-ACC and tied a record by being named ACC rookie of the week nine times, becamethe fourth Blue Devil to gain rookie of the year honors and the first since Alana Beard was so honored 11 years ago.
Williams paces the Blue Devils (24-4) with 14.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, and leads the conference with a Duke freshman record 102 blocked shots.
Rountree became the first Tar Heel named to the all-freshman team since Cetera DeGraffenreid in 2008.
