What had seemed to be a cloud was actually solid land, and Terrybubble, with Speedy still in his chest cavity, had a much-needed rest from their flight. Like the Gump (in The Marvelous Land of Oz), Terrybubble remembered his previous existence and indeed the day he died, in his case at the hands—or rather teeth—of what the dinosaur he called a mogerith. Speedy laughed that he’d been thinking of having a wire-haired terrier as a pet, and Terrybubble eagerly accepted the role, especially once he learned it involved new experiences such as fetching sticks and balls and chasing cats.
After a night sleeping in the open, Speedy found that the “faithful fossil” had fetched him a great many sticks and ball-shaped fruits. After breakfast (the stomachless dinosaur naturally did not eat), Speedy suggested a walk around the island, so with the boy once more secured in his ribcage, Terrybubble strode around the perimeter of the island and soon ran straight into a royal procession.
As you’ve probably guessed, they had come to rest on Umbrella Island, where the King, at the suggestion of his Su-jester Bamboula, had declared said procession to keep the Umbrellians’ spirits up. Not surprisingly, the sight of an ambulatory dinosaur skeleton caused an uproar, and it took Speedy a good while to convince everyone that all was well. Princess Gureeda took a liking to the boy, and eventually both Speedy and Terrybubble were invited to the palace.
The conniving Kachewka conferred privately with King Sizzeroo, and had him note that Speedy was the same height and build as the Princess. Since Loxo thought Gureeda was a boy anyway, he reasoned, why not give him this one? The kind-hearted King was dismayed at the thought, but Kachewka swore him to secrecy.
Having become fast friends, Gureeda and Speedy, went to a grove of umbrella trees, as Umbrellian law required everyone, even animals, to carry a brolly (indeed, back at the castle Waddy was working on a dino-sized one for Terrybubble). She’d become fond of Terrybubble too, and the two children made an enormous daisy chain which he proudly wore around his neck.
From her natural history book, the Princess learned that what had attacked Terrybubble was a Megalosaurus.
Learning that Pansy was a cat, Terrybubble chased her, frightening the poor creature, but only meant to catch her. Once calmed down, and perked up by a compliment from the dinosaur, the cat warmed up to him.
In the wizard’s tower, Speedy saw Waddy complete the giant umbrella intended for Terrybubble’s use, which, like the other umbrellas on the island, had many uses, including bearing its bearer aloft. Through a magic telescope, Speedy excitedly observed Oz beneath them, before the island headed out over the Nonestic Ocean.
It was here that Waddy decided to test the effectiveness of the new umbrella, and he and Speedy were soon aloft over the heaving sea…
