Using his seeing powers, Bitty Bit learned first of all who Dorothy and Pigasus were, then divined what had happened in Oz. Welcoming them to spend the night in his home—once the shooting tower had returned to its grounds and settled down– Bitty Bit ruminated on the problem, and in the morning presented his solution. Instead of going to Thunder Mountain, where Ozma and the other kidnapped rulers and celebrities of Oz lay in stasis at the bottom of Lightning Lake, he said they should go straight to the Emerald City.
Now, during the previous night, during which Dorothy and Pigasus had slept so comfortably, a spindly figure crept into Skamperoo’s sleeping quarters and absconded with the three emerald necklaces. Though Chalk tried to calm the panicky potentate, both he and Skamperoo were very nervous that day, knowing it could only have been Matiah, and it could only be a matter of time until he learned how the necklaces’ charm worked.
To Matiah, secreted in Ruggedo’s old hideout under the Emerald City’s foundations, it was taking too much time. He did hit upon the idea that someone other than the wisher had to hold the emeralds, and to that end he nabbed a Kitchen Boy named Iva to make the experiment.
All at once, darkness descended upon the Emerald City, and three voices firmly urged Chalk and Skamperoo to accompany them to the Wizard’s laboratory. Once inside, Dorothy closed the box given her by Queen Gloma, and the darkness vanished. Bitty Bit engaged the horse and the would-be Emperor of Oz in negotiations, during which Iva burst in, the necklaces around his own neck.
The Seer grabbed them and tossed them to Pigasus. Chalk managed to convince Bitty Bit to let him and Skamperoo have six more wishes in exchange for the secret of how to work the emeralds’ magic. He shared the secret only with Dorothy, who wore the necklaces as the horse and Skamperoo wished themselves back home. Bitty Bit then wished for Ozma and all who had been under Lightning Lake to be restored to the Emerald City.
At once, Ozma, all the rulers, the Wizard, Jinnicky, Highboy, and Omby Amby (his beard presumably green again) were there in the Wizard’s lab. The Seer told them that the emerald necklaces had belonged to Lorna the Wood Nymph, a capricious maiden from whom they once were stolen by squirrels, found by a woodcutter, and eventually given to Matiah.
At Ozma’s command, Matiah forgot all about the emeralds and returned to Skampavia, where Skamperoo and Chalk offered the five remaining wishes to Pinny Penny. He used three to wish happiness and prosperity for Skampavia’s king, people, and climate. Chalk and Skamperoo used the rest to see that their threefold cord would never be broken.
Earlier, Dorothy shared with Ozma the real secret of the emeralds’ power. But you’ll have to read the book to learn that!
