I thoroughly enjoyed covering my first FGCU Eagles Men’s Division 3 game this past Friday evening. I have to say that I had seriously missed my time on the ice with the Nikon. Unfotrunately, for the FGCU Eagles, it was not their night as they lost a hard played and fought game 8-2 to the Hawks who visited from West Palm Beach.
Starting goaltenders were as follows: FGCU: #29 Kyle Slazyk and HAWKS: #1 Jake Soffer.
The first period was rather quiet and uneventful, with no goals or penalties recorded. It was
straight back and forth play between the two ends of the ice, on a consistent level from both
However, the second period opened things up a bit with the Hawks repeatedly striking the FGCU net successfully four times between [17:13] and [1:11] of the period. Goals for the Hawks were as follows: [17:13] #2 (*not showing on online roster); [9:59] #11 Anthony Clark; [4:48] #10 David Goff and again at [1:11] #10 David Goff.
This visiting team was a solid and tight squad, passing precisely and accurately sometimes clear across entire zones and blue lines. FGCU had a fight on their hands and with the continual action and play at both ends. It is crucial to note that this loss did not result from a lack of effort from the Eagles’ squad.
FGCU finally answered on the goal page at [0:58] remaining in the second, scored by: #6 Mike Fowler, unassisted.
The close of the second period brought the Eagles to a 4-1 deficit and frustrations began to run high, and a minor scuffle broke out at the FGCU goal at the close of the period.
The penalties also racked up in the second period with three minors in the realms of tripping and roughing. This altercation did bring the bulk of these minutes as two 10:00 misconducts were handed out (one to each squad): [#11 Anthony Clark for the Hawks as well as #14 Jacob Smith from FGCU] and the two roughing penalties were also attributed to this scuffle at 2:00 to each squad as well: [#11 Anthony Clark for the Hawks and #14 Jacob Smith from FGCU]. Topped off be a 2:00 tripping minor to #20 Mike Gutowitz from FGCU.
The final period opened with a goaltending swap for both teams: #30 Kyle Torres took over the FGCU net and #35 Sean Tennyson manned the Hawks net.
The play grew to another level for both teams in this last period as the action grew a bit
tighter and rougher, as the Eagles battled to get back in this game. Again, the Hawks exhibited solid play, communications and passing to gain a wider lead about mid way through the third.
Hawks goals were put in at: [12:24] #6 (*not on online roster); [8:40] #12 Dylan Maller; [3:51] #26 (*not on online roster) and [1:01] #9 Justin Jantzen of the third period, in their relentless efforts to take this game from FGCU.
The only other Eagles goal was scored at [11:04] in the third, by #5 Jacob McCabe — assisted by #16 Nick Bucholz.
There was a moderate crowd on hand for the game to support their FGCU Eagles. There is a general admission charge of only $5.00 to enter the games, which are held at Germain Arena, in Estero, FL.
The games are on the recreational side of the arena for the most part; if they are in the main arena the schedules should note this accordingly–however, if they are not updated in time prior, I will include all times and rinks scheduled right here as I will preveiw and follow up all coming D2 and D3 Division FGCU Eagles Hockey games.
There is a Round Robin Tournament coming up set for March 16-20, 2012 @ Germain Arena and also the Division Championships are approaching quickly. Come on out and support your local college hockey teams, as they are most definitely the faces of the future within this game. GO EAGLES!
