Beginning January 31, 2012, nine finalist startup companies will meet with IBM and members of the venture capital community hoping to be named the IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year in an event known as the IBM SmartCamp Global Finals. From technologies that help commuters avoid traffic to others that detect skin cancer, the nine finalists were chosen from almost a thousand applicants in 2011.
SmartCamp is an event that identifies startups and entrepreneurs developing new ventures that align with IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative. Those identified are able to meet and network with wold-class entrepreneurs, investors, and industry experts. The finalists in 2012 have all created solutions designed to solve problems facing cities using technologies that include analytics, cloud computing, and mobile computing.

Previous winners from IBM SmartCamp competitions have gained attention from the venture capital community with nearly $50 million in investments, and have expanded to new global markets. The IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year will be announced on Thursday, February 2.
