After a three month hiatus, Young Justice returns this Saturday with new episodes and becomes a part of the all new DC Nation animation block on Cartoon Network. The season, so far, has been readily available on DVD broken up into volumes with the 3rd volume just released on 2/21, a week before the resumption of the season. With seven episodes left it’s time to play catch up and look back on the ride this amazing series has taken our characters so far.
The overlying arc of the season has been the presence of a secret organization known as The Light. The legion had shrouded their efforts in a series of red herring plot schemes to distract the initial team of Robin, Aqualad, & Kid Flash from their true master plan. Meanwhile, with the additions of Superboy & Miss Martian, the kids are still adjusting to each other as teammates although not everyone is upfront with who they are. Introduced by Martian Manhunter as his niece, M’gann/Megan (Miss Martian) in numerous episodes (Bereft, Targets, and Disordered) has inadvertently given clues that she might actually be posing as a Green Martian and is actually a White Martian, the natural enemy of the Green race. Her reasoning for keeping this a secret has yet to be revealed. Artemis, the latest addition to the team, is the sketchiest of them all. Aside from the show revealing that the recurring villain Cheshire is her sister, it’s secretly known by several members of the Justice League that Artemis is withholding other info about her identity to her teammates. On top of all that, there have been two separate mentions that there is a mole within the group and they are working for the Light.
Every episode is chock full of info that you gotta sit down and digest it all. Lies, secrets, and hidden agendas all wrapped up in action, story and depth. This show has it all. As we approach the final eps of the season, there are questions still looming about that need answering. What exactly is the Light’s endgame? What do the cloning of Superman, a vial of Venom/Blockbuster formula, the capture of a large starfish creature, and the boomtube technology of Apokolips have to do with each other? Who is Artemis really and why does her father (who’s another mystery) might want Wally dead? The weekend can’t come soon enough!
