Finding a PE class for your homeschooler is one of the first thing many new homeschooling families worry about. While an hour of active play outside can easily meet PE requirements, an outside PE class serves to provide some extra socialization as well as physical activity.
Here in the greater Birmingham area there are many classes offered during the day specifically for homeschooling children. Some of the PE possibilities in the Birmingham area are: Ballroom Dance, Ice Skating, and general PE.
The Pelham Civic Ice Rink offers group ice skating lessons to homeschoolers of all ages on Wednesdays from 10AM to 11AM. Lessons are $12 per session, arranged in blocks approximately 6 weeks long. Ice skate rental is included. Ice skating promotes concentration, balance, and is an excellent option to beat the Alabama heat. Contact the ice school office at (205) 620-6448 for session start dates.
On Friday mornings, Kurt and Wendy teach ballroom dance to preteens and teens at Bailey Dance in Hoover. For $5 per child, children are introduced to a wide variety of dances from the Waltz to the Tango. These classes are always busy and offer excellent socialization opportunities. Contact Curt or Wendy Johnson at 205-419-5104 or firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Local YMCA branches around Birmingham offer homeschool PE courses on various days and times. These classes follow a format more like you might remember from your days in school. Units on baseball, tennis, and basketball are generally offered along with other sports. Check with your local branch for cost and schedule. http://www.ymcabham.org/
