It is easy to see the wrong done around us today. If we have not had our fill, we only need to watch the news or read a newspaper to have more wrong put before us to consider. The evil men do ranges from the seemingly benign to the extremely appalling and repulsive.
There is always some “activist” decrying some evil or perceived evil, attempting to rile people up, angering them into action of one sort or another. It even seems politicians use this as a way of mobilizing constituents and winning people to their current cause.
This is not agape love. Agape love thinks no evil: agape love refuses to take or keep an inventory of worthless, depraved or injurious deeds.
When agape love sees someone living a seemingly worthless life, instead of the worthlessness of the life being lived it sees a person who needs to partake of the selflessly giving, superabundant feast of love.
We have prisons filled with people who have committed depraved and injurious deeds, what happens when these people get out of prison? The vast majority go back to the evil they did before. What does agape love do about it? What can agape love do about it?
Agape love brings the selflessly giving, superabundant feast of love even to those who seem to lead the most vile of lives. Our Lord Jesus Christ did not just die for the sins that seem acceptable to society; our Lord Jesus Christ died for all sins of every variety because all sin is evil, and all sin seeks to separate us from the love of God.
Jesus did not submit Himself to death on the cross only for those who were pick-pockets, or who told “little white lies”, or those who did not give quite as much as they could or should have. Our Lord Jesus Christ submitted Himself to death on the cross for those who refused to help their neighbors in need, for the rapist, the pedophile, the murderer, the serial rapists and serial killers. Our Lord Jesus Christ submitted Himself to death on the cross for those who seemingly live good lives, yet hold secret sins in their hearts, even though they do no outward act against another.
Agape love understands that only the graceful love of God has the power to overcome the desire for evil in the hearts of men (and women). Agape love does not sit back and count all the evil anyone does, but instead brings each person face-to-face with the love of Almighty God.
There is a reason our Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and was resurrected for our salvation. His great love for us knows we can never live a perfectly sinless life, and that the only way to overcome our desire for sin – however seemingly inconsequential and however seemingly totally depraved and reprehensible – is the pure agape love of God that we receive by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Agape love fully understands this and continually seeks to walk this love out through us in our lives.
Only when our eyes stop fixing themselves upon our own evil, and the evil of others, and not taking any account of it but instead fix our eyes upon the grace and perfect love of God will our hearts become like our Father’s. Only then will we see the opportunity for agape love and agape love’s victory and overcome all sorts of evil by lovingly changing our focus, and the focus of others to the eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ. On his first attempt Peter walked on water, imagine what God will do through us in the raging storms of life.
