This is what makes this job so much fun – finding a good place to eat where I wasn’t sure what to expect. And that describes Generations, a new bar and grill in the old Maidrite restaurant on 5th Ave. in Moline.
The menu isn’t large, which is all to the good – the cook can concentrate on doing those few things well. And he or she surely does! I know it’s unreasonable now to expect a whole menu to consist of home-made items, but the food we ordered the other night, plus comments made by other diners, makes me wonder if Generations tries very hard not to depend on the frozen and pre-packaged. And they’re serving good food for a very reasonable price!
The appetizer selection is what you’d expect in a bar and grill – $2.75 for an order of french fries to $5.95 for chicken strips. The Sampler is a very good bargain – $6.95 for a choice of three. And in the Featured Appetizer section are more unusual items, such as meat and chicken nachoes, $6.95 and $8.75 respectively, and Quesadillas for $4.95 and $6.25. There were also various kinds of buffaloe wings with 4 dipping sauces, a 10 pc. order going for $6.95.
Tacos are $4.95, salads run from $2.95 to $6.95, and there’s always a soup special – this evening Vegetable Beef soup. The selection of burgers are as expected, but I would like to try the Western Burger next time – topped with BBQ sauce, cheese and onion rings, for $6.95. The baskets come with your choice of two sides.
The Specialty Sandwiches are also the usual, but priced very reasonably, which also goes for the pizzas – $5.75 for a one topping personal pan pizza to $17.95 for a large specialty. You also get your choice of thin or raised crust.
On this visit, we ordered a Philly cheese basket, and the catfish basket, and were more than pleased with both. The cole slaw is delicious, and although the potatoe salad could use some salt, it, too, was very good. The catfish basket was loaded with large pieces of fish, and the Philly cheese sandwich is great. And you can’t beat the prices – the catfish basket was only $7.50 and the same price for the Philly steak. I particularly liked the french fries, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. That night, the special was a grilled tenderloin basket or taco salad for $5.95.
I think you’ll find this new place a very warm and welcoming restaurant, a great place to hang out with friends, watch a game on one of the TVs, and play a game of pool. It’s located at 4100 – 4th Ave., Moline, Ill., and the phone number 757-1331.
