First off, you the reader have to approach Howard the Duck with an open mind. Forget Lucas’s failed attempt at a film in the 80’s and prepare yourself for some of the most wickedly funny political satire you will ever read. To call Steve Gerber’s work subversive would be the understatement of the century.
Most folks assume that a talking animal book like this one is kid’s faire and should be left to the toddler to pre-teen set, they could not be more wrong. Howard the duck started off as a throw away back up character in a handfull of Man-Thing stories, and then went on to be regaurded (among the cult like fans of the book at least) to be one of the more controversial characters in the Marvel comics stable. He is a fowl (pun intended) mouth, cigar chomping, violent alien who is forced to live through the 1970’s here on earth. This is one hell of a read, and I cannot recommend it enough for those who want to see what the visual artform of comics can rise to. It is truely a shame that Mr. Gerber is no longer with us, or I am sure he would still be doing his bit to give politics and society the finger. So pick this one up if you can, the $100 bucks I spent on it was a worthwhile investment for a look back into comic history.
