The gospel music industry, especially those in DC, are very familiar with Attorney Ron L. Magnus who has long been a champion of gospel music and the gospel community. Now, he is taking steps to affect change within his community. On Monday, January 23, 2012, Magnus announced his candidacy for the Council seat recently vacated by the resignation of former Council member Harry Thomas, Jr.
Ron Magnus has served as the General Counsel of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) since 1992. In addition, he is Council for Tehillah Music Group and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. On September 3, 2011, Magnus spearheaded the successful “Evolution of Gospel” concert held at the Kennedy Center that kicked off Gospel Music Heritage Month. Later that month, he was instrumental in bringing gospel artists and public officials together to celebrate the 50th birthday of gospel industry insider Pastor Jerome Bell.
Many agree that Ron Magnus’ unique experience of 25 years in business, law, politics and the community would serve the ward well. He is running under the banner of “The Leadership Ward 5 Deserves.” Ron Magnus has stated that he has chosen to run in order to heal the ward and bring unity to the ward in a time of hurt, disappointment and frustration many feel toward City Hall.
“I am running because I want to bring strong aggressive leadership to the ward. I intend to speak to every neighborhood and every Ward 5 resident during this difficult time to restore our faith, replenish our trust, and call upon the residents of Ward 5 to believe again in ourselves.”~Ron Magnus
Magnus’ vision for Ward includes economic development and smart growth for jobs, restoring good government in DC, creating a covenant for constituency service in Ward 5, and quality health care for all residents. He also wants to ensure education excellence for children.
Over the past ten years, Magnus has demonstrated his strong commitment to children by raising more than $200,000 for scholarships for area children through his association as a Deacon with the New Bethel Baptist Church in Washington DC, and as Chairman of the Board of The Martin Luther King, DC Support Group, Inc. Although he has received many accolades for his achievements, he is most proud of his role as an ordained Deacon of New Bethel Baptist Church for 20 year.
Magnus lives in the Brookland neighborhood of Ward 5 and is no stranger to political activism. He has served in numerous capacities of leadership in Ward 5, in the District of Columbia and nationally. He served as Assistant Attorney General for the District of Columbia for many years and in the cabinet of former Mayor Anthony Williams.
He has worked in several Democratic presidential campaigns, in every District mayoral campaign since 1990, served on the staff of the Democratic National Committee and worked for numerous City Council members through the years. He has been a member of the local Democratic party for six terms and was selected as a DC delegate representing President Clinton and Sen. John Kerry. He endorsed President Obama in 2007, traveled the region to work for him, and served in the Obama Transition Committee
“We are the hope we have been waiting for all along. I firmly believe that the best is yet to come. I intend to be an advocate for Ward 5; I intend to be a fighter in Ward 5 and a uniter in Ward 5. To paraphrase the poet Gil Scott Heron as it relates to Ward 5 “Now more than ever, all the family must be together.” ~Ron Magnus
Magnus plans several activities in the community during his run for the Council seat, including gospel events. GME will alert readers when event information becomes available.
