Highlands Ranch is not just a community that attracts young families. More and more seniors ages 65 and above are staying in the community or moving here and making it their home. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the senior population of Douglas County increased 178 percent from 2000 to 2010, which was the second fastest growing senior population in a county in the United States.
Over the same 10-year period, the population of Highlands Ranch grew 36 percent, yet the senior population grew 177 percent. To help with this boom, the Highlands Ranch Metro District and Douglas County Aging and Adult Services partner to provide resources for older adults, their families and caregivers.
Highlands Ranch Senior Outreach Services provides information, educational programs and resources to Highlands Ranch senior adults and families. Senior Outreach Services Coordinator Jodie McCann plans free programs in addition to working one-on-one with individuals and families in the community.
Jodie helps seniors and their families with information about senior housing options, transportation to medical appointments or other errands, and care needs from assisted living to homecare or home modifications.
“There is a lot of help and information out there for seniors and often the hardest part is knowing where to look,” said McCann. “In addition to working directly with seniors, I work with a number of adult children who may find themselves as caregivers for their aging parents. It can be overwhelming and my hope is that Highlands Ranch residents of all ages will seek me out for direction, support and assistance.”
