Famed New York City auction house Phillips de Pury & Company will be seeking bidders on March 8 for a customized 2004 Maybach 57 valued somewhere between $100,000 and $150,000. Now what’s so special about the V-12 powered behemoth vehicle? The car is a piece of hip-hop history since it was featured in the Jay-Z and Kanye West music video “Otis” which was a Grammy Award-winning cut on their platinum selling album “Watch the Throne.”
The customized gray and black $340,000 exhaust pipe flame-throwing, ‘Escape from New York’ looking vehicle was reconfigured for the Spike Jonze-directed video and features pieced together bulging fender flares, exaggerated front ground effects, hacked off door panels that were placed in the rear to resemble wings and the car’s front grille was removed then reattached on the tail end.
Daimler AG scraped its high-end luxe mobile Maybach last year after dwindling sales and lack of profitability. Reportedly, there were fewer than 200 worldwide sales in 2010 of the $375K posh ride. The 57 and 62 Maybachs will however remain in production until 2013 but there will be no successor models.
The apocalyptic Maybach whose reconfiguration would make any car aficiondo faint of heart is somehow being categorized as contemporary art and a portion of its sale will benefit the Save the Children International, a leading independent organization that works to save lives globally with food, medical care and education.
Curious onlookers and hip-hop connoisseurs can view the vehicle from now until the day before the auction date either online at the auction house’s website or in person at 450 Park Avenue in New York City.
