Kurozakuro is a shonen fantasy series by Yoshinori Natsume. Mikito is a young man who wishes that he had the strength to fight back against his tormentors. He unwittingly makes a deal with a mysterious person named Zakuro, in which he’ll get supernatural strength in exchange for making Zakuro’s tree bloom. Mikito soon discovers the horrific catch: he’s slowly turning into an ogre who craves human flesh and a flower blooms on the tree for every human he kills.
The story’s pace is a little too fast at times, but it’s still interesting and enjoyable. The most memorable aspect of the series is that it manages to pull off a logical happy ending from a story premise that seems predestined to a tragic end. The origin of both the ogres and the humans who hunt them may remind some readers of the manga Claymore. However, to Yoshinori Natsume’s credit, it’s creative enough to stand on its own and it’s plausible to boot. Honolulu shonen fans looking for an interesting series should take a look at Kurozakuro.
