Horror movie fans: Are you ready for Spring Break? The weather here in southern Mississippi hasn’t been too harsh this winter, but you’re probably still ready to hit the beach. Want to get in the mood early with a good horror movie? These vacation-themed flicks just might do the trick.
Shark Night 3D (2011): Filmed and set entirely in Louisiana, Shark Night 3D follows a group of college students vacationing at a lake house for the weekend. But two local men are releasing sharks into the normally calm lake waters. How many of the teens will survive the night? (Hint: Not many.)
I Spit on Your Grave (2009): Remake of a controversial 1978 film in which a young woman decides to take a weekend trip to an isolated cabin. Upon her arrival, she is raped, tortured, and left for dead by a group of local men. But she doesn’t die, and the revenge she has planned for them is worse than anything they ever imagined.
Hattiesburg residents: I Spit on Your Grave is available at the Redbox kiosk at Kangaroo Express on Highway 49.
Turistas (2006): A group of teen tourists in Brazil are stranded on a beach after a bus crash and later kidnapped by foreigners who want…well, something from them. But what? Olivia Wilde and Josh Duhamel star.
The Ruins (2008): Based on the novel by Scott Smith, The Ruins follows four friends vacationing in Mexico who follow a German tourist looking for his missing brother in the ruins of a Mayan temple. But the locals are pretty protective of their ruins because they hold the gang hostage on top of an ancient pyramid and leave them to deal with scorching heat, lack of food…and man-eating plants.
Hostel (2005): The ultimate foreign-vacation-gone-wrong franchise. Three friends backpacking in Europe stop at a hostel for the night where they meet a group of girls willing to jump into bed with them…and then hand them over to a secret organization that likes to torture and kill people. Sounds like a typical relationship, no?
Piranha 3D (2010): In this update of a 1978 Jaws parody (and possibly the only movie on the list where the locals aren’t the problem), the normally quiet town of Lake Victoria is overrun with vacationers looking for spring break fun. But that fun comes to an end when an underground earthquake releases a group of ancient, flesh-eating piranhas from their underwater prison. Plenty of gore (and fun) follows. A sequel, Piranha 3DD, will hopefully be released sometime this year.
Are there any other movies that make you want to stay at home for your vacation? Please, let someone know.
