I have a confession to make: I’m the Goldilocks of lip stains.
Tarte’s are too slide-y and don’t sink into my lips. Palladio’s are long-lasting on the lips, but the marker-style tip of the pen always dries up too soon. My lips can’t seem to absorb the liquidy Urban Decay lip ink or Benefit’s Benetint. Et cetera. So I’m perpetually on a quest to find the perfect lip stain—the one that looks and feels “just right.”
When I saw Maybelline’s new Super Stay 10 Hour Stain Gloss at my local CVS, I was pretty stoked. At under $10 each, this stain/gloss is less expensive than stains made by Tarte, Urban Decay, and Benefit. I decided to try it in Refreshing Red.
What I love about this product is that it is definitely the most moisturizing lip stain I’ve ever tried, and it also leaves a great glossy finish on my lips along with a pretty wash of color. Refreshing Red is noticeable, but not too bright, and it’s the type of color that could flatter any skin tone. I love the color and the way it feels on my lips. Unlike the Tarte lip stains, which look awful over my chapped lips, this Maybelline stain/gloss not only hides the chappiness, but also helps to moisturize the lips.
Applying this stain/gloss is easy thanks to the innovative brush. It’s a little oval-shaped brush that’s hollow in the middle, and the hollow part sort of collects stain/gloss that you then apply using this incredibly soft, sort of spongy brush. It goes on smoothly, and the best part—despite the fact that it looks shiny and glossy, like it might slide off your lips at any second, it doesn’t get on your teeth!
But little miss Goldilocks is still not totally happy with this gloss. It’s marketed as a 10-hour stain/gloss. Maybe the product lasting this amount of time is possible if you sit quietly and don’t eat or drink. It looked great on my lips for the first hour, but as soon as I ate or drank anything, most of it came off my lips. My lips still had an incredibly faint flush to them after eating, so the gloss/stain wasn’t totally gone, but I would definitely not consider this a 10-hour stain/gloss since the intensity of the product is so diminished after eating or drinking.
I like the texture, moisturizing properties, price, and color of this stain/gloss better than any other one I’ve tried, so I’m glad I’ve tried it and will likely buy it again (there are pinks, corals, berrys, and more reds available, so there’s a good variety of colors to choose from). But I’m always going to keep the tube handy and in my purse—I have no doubt I’ll need to reapply this stain/gloss much more often than I’d expected.
