It has been said over and over that “men are visual creatures”. There is another absolute truth, however, that women do not know as well: men couldn’t care less about fashion. This is not to say that a man does not want a woman to look good in the clothes that she wears, it simply means that if your ultimate goal is to command the attention of the male species it will not matter if you are wearing last season’s Prada boots or the newest skirt off the Spring 2012 Michael Kors runway. This column focuses on fashion; what is currently on trend and how to wear it. There is nothing wrong with following fashion trends. The question posed here is: what is your ultimate goal? If the answer is to catch a man or just his attention, focus on the following principles.
Steve Santagati explains in his book: The Manual: A True Bad Boy Explains How Men Think, Date, and Mate that, “men turn to look at a hint of sexiness a million times faster than a hint of style”. He also says, “Some men may not admit it, but we love a hint of ‘trampy’ in everything that women wear”. Take note of the word hint when you put this into practice. Steve is not saying you must dress like a slut if you want the attention of a man, however, allude to a bit of naughtiness in your wardrobe and you’ll be swatting them away like mosquitoes.
Show A Little Skin
A study was done by this writer where a variety of men, single and attached, were asked to look at a series of photos taken from VictoriasSecret.com. The men were asked to decide which women they found most attractive based solely on what they were wearing. The hands down winners included the Eyelet Blouse ($49.50 and comes in four colors). This peasant style off-the-shoulder top is described as a “waist defining wonder” and will certainly catch his eye and keep you looking feminine and trendy. Another winner was the Lightly Padded Bra Top ($59.50) which is effortlessly sexy and shows just enough skin. The simplicity of the top also makes it easy to accessorize. A personal writer favorite and also a favorite among the men in the study was the Long Sleeve Stretch Lace Top ($39.50 and comes in four colors). In the photograph the model paired the ultra-feminine top with a pair of cut-off denim shorts. It was the perfect balance of sexy, stylish, and accessible. That outfit, paired with wedge sandals and simple accessories makes the ideal spring man-hunting outfit.
The Perfect Outfit (According to a Man)
When you are primping for a night out with a girlfriend or you want to catch the eye of the cute barista at Starbucks, you may be guilty of over-thinking your outfit choice. Would you like to know the best thing you can put on when making your third coffee run of the day or having brunch with your best friend on Sunday? A pair of denim shorts or a denim skirt, a simple tank top, and sandals; that’s it. There is nothing sexier to a man than a woman showing off a little skin while still looking approachable. Steve Santagati writes in his book that legs are a powerful force for a woman that should be taken advantage of; which leads to the next principle.
Men Do NOT Care About Your Shoes
Men love to look at a woman in high heels. This is true not because he is admiring her taste in pumps; he is admiring the way she looks in said heels. High heels make a woman’s legs look amazing and irresistible to men. So, again, if your goal is landing a man, break out your go-to comfortable heels that make your legs look like a Barbie doll and strut your stuff. In fact, the simpler the shoe looks the better. A man doesn’t want a woman with shoes that look as if they could impale him or that make it necessary for you to hold on to any nearby object to keep yourself from falling over. Try these Xhiliration Tawny Wedge Sandals ($24.99 from Target). They are simple and stylish and will not give your feet any unnecessary pain. They are also versatile and can be paired with just about any outfit.
Avoid Looking High Maintenance
Nothing is going to make a man run away faster than even an inkling that the girl he has his eye on is high maintenance. Men are relatively simple so they will be searching for a mate that looks good and doesn’t take a lot of work to get there. So if your look involves a 90 minute makeup application process, perfected curls without a single hair out of place, and accessories that take more than ten minutes to remove; you’re going to impress every single woman you see over the course of the evening but, chances are, not a single man. So keep it simple, accessible, and not overly styled and the men will see you as the hot girl who doesn’t even know it, which is the best image to project.
