BOOM – The first ever winter concert at Red Rocks filled the amphitheater despite last night’s 20 degree temperatures and early morning flurries. Sure, the show was sold out but that doesn’t mean that every ticket holder was going to show up. But by the looks of the crowd last night, it is a pretty safe bet to say that they did and Common and Atmosphere made sure to make it worth every. single. shiver.
Common’s constant energy and resilient flow allows him to never miss a beat. And those beats prove the rapper’s unique talent that makes him stand out from the rest. His performance last night had a simple, yet powerful theme of celebrate. And it is no coincidence that the theme comes from one of the many, many things that makes Common stand apart which is his appreciation for life that shines through his new single, “Celebrate.” The single is off of his new album, The Dreamer / The Believer (2011) which has appearances by nine time Grammy Award-winner John Legend, nine time Grammy Award-nominated Nas and an original poem by multi-award-winning writer and poet Maya Angelou (wikipedia.com).
Atmosphere was the closing performance of the night and, as always, they killed it. Making a statement in true Atmosphere style, they opened up with the crowd favorite “GodLovesUgly.” Returning to CO for the second time since August when they performed at Red Rocks for their Family Vacation Tour, the group seemed to want to keep their old school fans happy with performing “The Woman with the Tattooed Hands,” a single off of their 2001 album Lucy Ford.
Keeping the evening balanced however, the show opened up with new up-and-comers Get Cryphy and Grieves and Budo. Red Rocks always guarantees a good time, but last night history was made and as founder Ben Anderson said in between sets, Icelantic will be bringing Winter on the Rocks back in 2013 – BOOM.
