How often have you been told that there is something you can’t do? I don’t mean something where your parents, teachers or other authority told you that there was something you can’t do like stay out past your curfew, turn in your research paper late, or take an extra thirty minutes for lunch. I am referring to the kinds of can’t that Gandhi was told. The kinds of can’t that Martin Luther King Jr. was told. The kinds of can’t that Helen Keller was told. The kind of can’t that Nick Vujicic was told. The kinds of can’t that Tammy Duckworth was told. Isn’t it amazingly cool that Tammy Duckworth who is an Iraq War Veteran and was recently elected to serve as a member of Congress during the recent elections and that she will now be representing the 8th Congressional District of Illinois?!
If you recall in my recent article, I mentioned for more years and what that means for us. Well, here we are again with a perfect opportunity to discuss and expand upon that idea.
Tammy Duckworth, Nick Vujicic, Helen Keller, and Stephen Hawking are people that are commonly labeled as disabled. As a part-time or freelance interpreter and performer of American Sign Language performance art, I am intimately linked with the deaf community and deaf culture and one thing that I learned early on was that Deaf people do not view themselves as disabled. What they are is endowed with different abilities. They are able to do everything a hearing person can do except hear.
When I first learned about Nick Vujicic, I was stunned that this man with no arms and no legs was doing things that I do not do, such as play golf and surf! Had Helen Keller accepted the limitations of the society to lock her down, this brilliant and influential woman would never have become the teacher and speaker that she became.
I believe it is time that we all eliminate the term “disabled” from our vocabulary. It is time that we no longer allow anyone to dis our ability to not only succeed in life but to joyously thrive! We place far too much power in the words can’t and impossible.
What does that mean to you when you read that word, when you hear that word, when you speak that word? What was once impossible became the airplane in the minds of Orville and Wilbur Wright, what was once impossible became freedom for slaves in the mind of Abraham Lincoln, and civil rights in the minds of Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. and the countless other civil rights leaders and supporters. Impossible when seen from a metaphysical point of view is an opportunity to make a slight adjustment in consciousness from Impossible to I’m Possible! I AM POSSIBLE!
From that higher awareness, everything becomes available to you. You are in the universal flow with the Divine. There is no resistance, no hindrance, and no inner critic that allows you to accept what you can’t do because it is impossible.
26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26 New International Version (NIV)
When we look at things from our earthly consciousness, our lower consciousness, a place of lack and limitation, we see only what can’t be done. World peace is impossible. Ending world hunger is impossible. Ending poverty is impossible. And yet, when we lift our eyes to the hills from which comes our help, meaning when we raise our awareness, when we lift our vibrations to that of the Divine within and all about us, AS us… then what was once seen as impossible becomes a declaration of what is possible!
I applaud and am inspired by people like Tammy Duckworth, Nick Vujicic, and actress, director, and dancer as well as founding member of Open Circle Theater, Suzanne Richards . . . because they have refused to go quietly into that good night nor have they raged against the dying of the light; instead they have become an eternal flame that demonstrates what the human spirit can do when it makes up its mind to be, do, and have what it says is possible!
Never let anyone tell you that you can’t, never let anyone did your abilities, and never accept the impossible… you are God in the flesh and with God all things are possible!
Much love to you my spiritual family!
