Saturday’s UFC on FOX 2 free-for-view broadcast event on FOX-TV is rich with former college wrestlers… which makes it prime material for the writers at InterMatFight.com to weigh in with previews and predictions.
Among the former collegiate matmen stepping into the Octagon at United Center in Chicago Saturday night: Phil Davis, 2008 NCAA Division I 197-pound champ for Penn State… NCAA D1 All-Americans Chris Weidman (Hofstra), Shane Roller (Oklahoma State) and Chael Sonnen (of the now-defunct University of Oregon wrestling program)… and Rashad Evans, a starter at Michigan State.
Among InterMatFight.com’s writers penning features in advance of UFC on FOX 2:
> T.R. Foley’s big-picture analysis of the UFC-wrestling connection: Senior writer T.R. Foley‘s article, appropriately titled “UFC relies on wrestlers to promote MMA in mainstream” takes a quick look back at the first UFC on FOX event from last November… then focuses on this weekend’s competition with this statement: “The UFC has composed one of their most competitive cards in promotional history (notably on a weekend free of gridiron deities). Much like the blue collar utopia (former Chicago mayor Richard J.) Daley imagined in the 70s, the UFC is promoting its product on the their hardest working and most reliable resource they have at their disposal: wrestlers.” Foley then builds a case for why UFC relies on wrestlers to fill its fight cards and grab viewers.
> Yael Grauer breaks down Maia vs. Weidman: One of the featured fights at UFC on FOX 2 has BJJ phenom Demian Maia taking on Chris Weidman, a two-time NCAA All-American for Hofstra University (2006, 2007). As InterMatFight.com staff writer Yael Grauer points out, Weidman defeated Phil Davis in college. There’s much more to learn from Grauer’s insightful preview of Saturday’s Maia-Weidman middleweight match-up.
> UFC Monster previews UFC on FOX 2: As InterMatFight.com fixture UFC Monster points out early in his preview for the Chicago event, “Tonight’s card is a showcase for wrestling fans. Some of the best pure wrestlers, All-Americans, and national champions will be pitted against each other in a night full of exciting Windy City fights.” He then goes on to make predictions on the aforementioned Maia-Weidman, Rashad Evans-Phil Davis, Chael Sonnen-Michael Bisping, Shane Roller-Michael Johnson, and other bouts…. all in his no-holds-barred style that makes for fun reading.
