Abby Lee Miller is the ferociously talented and all-star, tough-talking head dance instructor on Lifetime’s triple mega hit Dance Moms (Tuesdays at 9PM – you simply must). The sizzling show gives you a front row seat to straight up dance world d-r-a-m-a as it chronicles the powerhouse Miller, feuding Dance Moms, and their super competitive daughters. Mmm, drama!
The equal parts fiery and funny Miller took a time out from Dance Moms to talk about everything from her fav moment from the new season (hint: it involves tears)…to what it takes to make it in the dance world.
MM: Kelly Ripa and Kristin Chenoweth recently said they love Dance Moms and want to meet you. Would you teach them a dance class?
Abby Lee Miller: Can Kelly dance? I know Kristin Chenoweth can. Actually, one of my students was part of the original cast of “Wicked” with Kristin.
MM: Would you put Kelly and Kristin in a pyramid?
ALM: No [laughs]. If we did do one though, I think they’d put me on top [laughs]. I might do a circle or a line with Kelly and Kristin.
MM: What’s your secret to handling non-stop Dance Moms drama all day/every day?
ALM: I don’t want to have a heart attack, so I let it out. The girls aren’t too much trouble, it’s the moms.
MM: What’s your favorite moment from this season?
ALM: When Mackenzie learned a solo in one hour. She made me cry. I thought “I’m one damn fine teacher, or this girl just crossed the threshold.”
MM: Do you wisih you could do over any moments from this season or are you 100% happy?
ALM: No, this is real life. You don’t get a do-over. I teach my girls that you get one impression, and one shot to get a producer to hire you.
MM: What’s the difference between an Abby Lee Dance Company student and all other dance students?
ALM: I have a reputation. My students don’t always win competitions, but they go on to work professional. I teach girls to dance well and to do it in 3 inch heels.
MM: What’s your best advice to girls who desperately want to become dancers?
ALM: The dance world is a very small world. You have to love everybody, never say anything negative, and work your butt off.
MM: You’ve taught over 3,000 students…have a famous dance studio…hit TV show. What makes you – the Abby Lee Miller brand – so crazy successful?
ALM: It’s all timing. I don’t have a husband, I don’t have kids. So I dedicate my life to other people’s children. They go on to make millions of dollars, do Broadways shows, and travel all over the world.
Now, some of my students are on the other side of the table and can hire my kids who are just graduating. I’m leaving a legacy.
MM: Please say you’re signing on for season 3 through million of Dance Moms.
ALM: If we could just do “Dance Kids” and forget the moms, that’d be great! [laughs].
