It was another awesome week of Rock in Detroit. Every night there was another killer concert to see, and Friday was something extra special! Jane’s Addiction performed at the Fillmore Detroit. These guys have broken up a few times, but have reunited once more for a tour and with a new album, The Great Escape Artist.
The bands members has changed numerous times over the years, but nevertheless, all members playing on tour have been in the band previously. Singer Perry Farrell is still the flamboyant front man on lead vocals, the infamous Dave Navarro is on guitar, the talented Stephen Perkins on all the drums & percussion, and Chris Chaney on bass.
The Theatre of the Escapists Tour 2012 kicked off last week and hit Detroit early on. Along for the tour is a two piece garage rock band from Belgium, called Black Box Revelation. They had a cool sound that warmed up the crowd and increased our excitement and anticipation.
Afterwards, fans began chanting “Janes” until the lights dimmed and the show was to begin.
All the guys are looking absolutely fabulous and the stage props were over the top. There was a theatrical theme to the set, with 2 beautiful ladies swinging on swings (one just happens to be Perry Farrells Wife) with gorgeous white ballroom gown that extended 12 feet. A bird looking creature that was fluttering around, a hunter with a big gun, a taxidermy Bear, a huge 20 foot statue of 2 naked girls, Persian rugs, and bottles of wine. The eye candy was plentiful and it was quite a memorable performance.
Singer Perry Farrell sounded amazing. His voice was clear and strong. He sang effortlessly, and looks like he hasn’t aged one bit. There was a gleam in him eye, and he cracked smiles here and there. You could tell he was having a great time and so happy to be on stage again. He mentioned how much he loved Detroit, and reminisced on his first visit to Detroit years ago.
The show was filled with new and old songs, and about half way though, there was a short intermission. The stage crew scrambled to set up more drums, percussion, steel pans, acoustic guitars and those awesome leg lamps from the Christmas Story Movie. Jane’s then performed an intimate set of three songs acoustically and the crowd was mesmerized.
The hunter came out, firing his gun out into the crowd, and Bam! Things kicked off into high gear again and they performed a few more songs plugged in. The ladies seemed to be fighting for Narvarro’s attention, as he flirted with the fans. Female crowd surfers were popping up all over the place, probably just to help them get close to see & touch Narvarro & Farrell.
The show went 25 minutes past the venue curfew, but no one seemed to be complaining. It was Friday Night in Detroit Rock City, with Jane’s Addiction! What a fantastic show! If you have a chance to see them on tour, you must go!
