The world is changing at breakneck speed, and the internet is one of the main engines driving it forward. Where these changes will take us is impossible to tell, but some of them are really exciting, particularly in the area of education. One of the most exciting new developments in online learning is taking place at the Khan Academy, where you will find powerful new tools for students and tutors.
In a TED talk last year, Salman Khan, creator of the popular online learning center, outlined the powerful new learning tools his organization has created. The site had already started a learning revolution with its more than 1500 hugely popular tutorial videos. But Khan has one-upped himself with his Exercise Dashboard.
The Dashboard is a map of math topics, from simple addition to introductory calculus. Click on a topic and it brings you to a series of online practice problems and tracks your progress. It even has a Coach feature that allows tutors and teachers to visualize the progress of their students.
Whether you are a student, teacher, or tutor, you cannot afford to miss Khan’s TED talk, and if you are learning or teaching math, I think the Khan’s Dashboard will be a powerful tool to help you and your students reach their goals.
The internet, with its cornucopia of information and innovations, will continue to revolutionize education. It offers the opportunity for anyone, anywhere in the world, to learn virtually anything they want to learn, at their own pace. What a marvelous thing!
