The closer the NBA trade deadline (March 15) gets; the crazier the NBA trade rumors seem to be. Even though the one superstar everyone is talking about right now in terms of being traded on or before the trade deadline is Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, the one team that seems to be mentioned in a lot of trade rumors lately and likely to make a move is the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers are definitely interested in Howard and could make a move to acquire arguably the league’s best center in a deal involving the up-and-coming Andrew Bynum by the deadline. The only problem is that Magic GM Otis Smith seems to be weighing the team’s options and is possibly looking for a better deal out there than the one the Lakers are offering.
Despite the fact the trigger hasn’t been pulled on a Dwight Howard trade to Los Angeles, the Lakers’ front office has been working diligently trying to make a deal to improve this team in the frontcourt. With the Lakers’ biggest weakness being at point guard, the team has been linked to trade rumors involving players like Deron Williams (New Jersey Nets), Andre Miller (Denver Nuggets), Jonny Flynn (Houston Rockets) and Kyle Lowry (Houston Rockets).
Any one of those players would be a considerable upgrade for the Lakers at the point guard position, but the latest trade rumor coming out of Lakerland could be the best option available outside of Deron Williams. Reportedly, the Lakers could be targeting All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo of the rival Boston Celtics in a deal that would involve Pau Gasol as the centerpiece heading to Beantown.
In a Q&A session with Lakers.com, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak would like to make a deal before the NBA trade deadline and is looking for the following:
“If there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we’d love to do it … but that’s not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it’s better than what you have. That’s all.”
According to Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld.com, the only point guard in the league that fits that description is Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics. Apparently, sources have also told Hoopsworld.com that the Boston Celtics have interest in acquiring forward Pau Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers.
With the Lakers struggling on the current six-game road trip (1-2 record so far) and hints of a trade being dropped by Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant if the team continues to struggle, this trade between the rival Celtics and the Lakers might not be as crazy as it seems.
Rajon Rondo has averaged 13.6 points, 9.8 assists (2nd in the NBA) and 4.8 rebounds per game for the Boston Celtics this season.
