So Damn Lucky, the third novel in the Lucky O’Toole mystery series written by Deborah Coonts, was released today. To mark the occasion, Coonts is taking her Las Vegas author-signing persona on the road in a seven-city tour that begins in Houston and ends at the Left Coast Crime Conference in Sacramento.
Publishers Weekly said, “…Coonts covers Sin City territory with a dash of CSI and Janet Evanovich in her glitzy, lighthearted novels featuring Lucky O’Toole.”
Lighthearted is one thing. Dead funny writing is quite another. And Coonts, who describes herself as a “Southern girl who is fluent in sarcasm,” has plenty of fans who will agree that Lucky’s adventures are far more than lighthearted.
Here is Coonts’ description of So Damn Lucky. “Halloween in Vegas. Toss the lure of a ‘clothing optional’ weekend into the cauldron with UFO hunters seeking ‘close encounters,’ the annual Houdini Séance, and magicians on a witch hunt. Add dashes of a missing lover, a hormonal mother, a delicious chef, and a middle-aged Oklahoma couple intent on adding a bit of spice to their life. The resulting roiling brew is enough to keep Lucky O’Toole, the ‘problem solver’ at the Babylon jumping. And, when a magician disappears, things get complicated…”
Coonts wrote for years before she was “discovered.” She said, “I can almost remember the exact moment when I invited Lucky to play and turned her loose. My word, I had no idea! Not only did she join the party, but she brought friends! And they keep coming, assaulting me in the shower, robbing me of sleep, making me laugh out loud at the most inappropriate times…”
For someone who says, “Southern women aren’t raised, we’re groomed,” laughing out loud at inappropriate times might be a bit disconcerting. However, Coonts can always blame the moment on Lucky. “I found out that fluency in sarcasm I cultivated as a child, despite many ‘time-outs’ at the hands of the big people, is still lurking inside me, begging for an outlet.”
When asked whether there was anything else she’d like her fans to know, Coonts said, “About ME? God forbid! I guess they all know I have an active fantasy life…what else could be more revealing?”
