Well the 2012 Mardis Gras Season has begun! There are so many krewes now in the Shreveport and Bossier area and even more in the surrounding towns! Who doesn’t like a parade! North Louisiana has kicked off its Mardi Gras Season and it is officially underway from now through Fat Tuesday on February 21.
This is an exciting time of the year for revelers in the Shreveport and Bossier City area! The two biggest Krewes in the area are Centaur and Gemini. Centaur kicks off with a ‘loading party’ on February 10 at their den on the corner of Aero Drive and North Market! Bring the kids for an up close look at the beautiful floats before they roll. Food, beverages and music will abound! The Krew of Centaur rolls on February 12! New this year, and a treat for those in the Broadmor and Shreve Island neighborhoods, the route has been reversed! Yep! That means if you’re at East Kings Highway and Preston area at 4:30PM your kids can grab for their stash of over 4 million beads, cups and doublooms! From there, the parade turns east and then onto Clyde Fant Parkway heading north until the end at Lake Street.
The Krewe of Gemini kicks off on February 17 with their loading party at the Krewe of Gemini Mardis Gras Museum! This is located at 2101 East Texas Street in Bossier City. Lots of food and beverages as well as music will abound here as well! The parade rolls on February 18 at 4:00PM and has the exact opposite route as Centaur! So if you want to get the best throws, be on Clyde Fant Parkway near the corner of Lake Street!
The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux, a smaller and quainter (certainly not quieter) Krewe is dedicated to, you guessed it, the canine & feline friendly crowd! The theme this year is “Peace, Love & Paws.” It’s your change to let your pet shine. The kids will love it! You can enter YOUR pet in this parade! This parade begins at 601 Clyde Fant Parkway. You can register your pet early for a savings of $5.00! The parade festivities begin at 1:30 on February 12, and they ‘roll’ at 3:00PM. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Dressed, Best Float & get this, The Best Owner Look A Like!
Another quaint neighbor hood Krewe is the Krewe of Highland. This parade rolls on February 19 at 2:00PM. This parade begins and ends at Byrd High School at 3201 Line Avenue and the Carnival de Columbia takes place here as well!
So, get out those masks, left over beads, costumes and party hats for the Mardis Gras Season has begun!
